Aspiring Artist Award

E-mail Print PDF

Coming up soon is the Lydia Hankemeier Aspiring Artist Award.  This cash award was established by Marilyn Seiberling in honor of her grandmother, a longtime member of the KAA in the 30s and 40s.  Lydia painted in oil-based oil and watercolor, often painting on both sides of a piece of cardboard to maximize the materials she had at hand.

This prize is awarded to a member who works in oil or in watercolor and meets other criteria stipulated in the entry form, which will be available May 1st.  This year, however, we will also have a show of applicants' paintings at the Center.

Interested members may pick up an application at the Art Center beginning May 1, and may drop off three to five oil or watercolor paintings for the exhibit May 26-29.  Entry forms are due no later than May 22.

The $250 prize was bestowed on E'lisa Kelly, a senior at Kokomo High School.   As part of her award, she has the opportunity for a one-person show at the Art Center during the last two weeks of August.

Ben and Doris Hippensteel established this award after the death of his mother, Geneva Hippensteel, in 2003.  It is awarded to a high school senior who meets the criteria of Art-Off-The-Square, an annual early spring event sponsored by the Tri Kappa Sorority and coordinated by Bonnie Pettay.
